Today in a note and email from the Twitter API Team, Twitter has outlined upcoming changes to its gelocation API.
As it stands now, users can create “geo-tweets,” or Tweets that are tagged with very specific GPS coordinates. The level of specificity unnerves some users who are wary to give away such personal and actionable information.
Twitter is out to make that all much better. The upcoming changes include giving coordinates context, turning them into locations. People “inherently want to talk about a “place”. a place, for a lot of people, has a name and is not a latitude and longitude pair.” Look out Foursquare? At the moment, just what a location means and how it will be created and manged is unclear.
Twitter does highlight code examples as to how a tweet will be tagged in SoMa, but how the location is first built is still not specified. Developers, if I have this wrong, drop a note in the comments.
Twitter is also going to “help users who aren’t comfortable annotating their tweets with their exact coordinates, but, instead, are really happy to say what city, or even neighborhood, they are in.” This of course will give users a variety of privacy options, giving everyone a level that they are comfortable with.
Finally, “annotating your place with a name does that too,” meaning that new API upgrades will be flexible enough to handle location in many new configurations.
Big upcoming upgrades that are going to help Twitter continue to grow and improve. Of course, this will do nothing to solve Twitter’s continuing problem: uptime.
This “first pass” will only apply to US data, sadly. This will b rapidly expanded. Twitter also requests that all questions are sent to @TwitterAPI.
Hat tip @zacwitte.

Nearly one year ago, I wrote about how McDonald’s Big Mouth Billy Bass-inspired Filet-O-Fish commercial had the ability to crawl inside my brain, refuse to exit, and — through the power of hypnosis — force me to do anything that singing fish required of me. (Basically, he was my version of this.)
But just as I was beginning to regain control of my mind 11 months later — and formed the ability to resist the urge to swallow one of those terrifyingly square fried fish patties — the fish is back! For pure nostalgia’s sake, McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish 2.0 makes me happy, but now I resist picking up my phone whenever it vibrates, in fear that Billy will brainwash me into investing all my cash in McDonald’s or outdated products from the 1990s. I am getting sleepy…so sleepy…Help! Get him out of my head — again!
Why Food Is The Talk Of TED 2010?
Big issues are hard. They're scary. And they tend to make people put their head in their hands.
So at TED 2010 — it all comes down to food.
Why? Because as it turns out food is at the center of many of the big issues that face the world.
- Food and The Environment.
- Food and Genetic Engineering.
Here's what I'm connecting, and seeing connected, in many ways for the first time.
Dan Barber is a chef. He stood on the TED stage and talked about his love affair with two fish. Dan isn't a vegetarian, or even a food activist as you might imagine one. His Blue Hill Farm is a foodie paradise. It is, to use Dan's word: Delicious. And his story of two fish helped to expose the often false marketing promise that make use of words like Sustainable and Organic. The first fish that he fell in love with, and cooked and sold, was fed what the farmers called “sustainable protein.” But as he researched the word “sustainable” he found that the fish was being fed pellets of chicken parts. For Dan, feeding fish chicken is hardly sustainable. And he couldn't serve the fish any more because it 'tasted like chicken.'
But then Barber found another source for fish. A farm that is entirely sustainable. Where marshland, pink flamingos and nature create the perfect environment for clean water, and health and therefore good tasting fish.
Barber urged a “radically new conception of agriculture.” He believes in sustainable farming that makes use of nature's finely balanced ecosystems. Not only is it environmental, he argues, it also produces the best-tasting ingredients.
For Barber, a foodie and a chef, to be able to make the argument that healthy food is better tasting, better for the environment as it takes less of a protein input, and better for our economy as healthy food costs less is nothing less than startling.
Barber's fish love story was just the start of this quest for a food-based solution to a web of global issues.
Michael Specter was on stage — a noted journalist, Specter is a staff writer for the New Yorker. His new book, Denialism, asks why we have increasingly begun to fear scientific advances instead of embracing them. He looked at all the holistic cures and medical solutions suggested we're trading in 'big pharma' for 'big placebo.' So, what is the solution that Specter suggests? Hardly willing to duck controversy, he says the future of solving the food crisis in the world is genetic engineering. Shocking as this may seem his position is that we already create new foods, and that fear of so-called “Franken-Foods” is more fear created by media than any scientific basis in the danger of engineering food solutions.
Food as a medicine? It appears so. Cancer researcher William Li of the Angiogenesis Foundation, talked about “medical revolution happening all around us.” Li explained that “Many foods are rich with Angiogenesis inhibitors, including: red grapes, soy beans, nutmeg, pumpkin, kale, blueberries and garlic. What we eat is our chemotherapy three times a day.”
But the winner of the coveted TED Prize was the one that was frankly the most shocking.
For Jamie Oliver, the british activist chef and realty TV host, the cost of feeding our children unhealthy food can be easily quantified. The result is childhood obesity and stagging new health costs. For the passionate members of the slow food movement, for vegetarians, and vegans, and other members of world community who are focused on issues facing the world, Jamie Oliver changed the conversation by saying simply — what matters most is what we feed our children.
Chris Anderson, TED's Curator told CNN; “Every year we're looking around for someone who can inspire the world to do something big and interesting. The issue of obesity, both in the US and worldwide, is a big deal. A shocking problem in a world where you've got a lot of people starving and a lot of people killing themselves by overeating. Or eating the wrong things. We were interested in finding an inspirational figure who could address that.”
And as the winner of the TED prize, Oliver gets to make a wish, “I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”
Here's how The New York Times reported on Oliver's wish:
Mr. Oliver had already established a beachhead in the United States in Huntington, W. Va., statistically one of the most unhealthy communities in the country. His alternatingly humorous and emotional efforts to convert the community into eating better are documented in a series, “Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution,” which will be shown by ABC starting on March 26.
In one clip from the program, schoolchildren misidentified tomatoes for potatoes, an eggplant for a pear and a beet for an onion. Mr. Oliver said that they did not know the vegetables because they do not cook with them.
At the darkest moments during the campaign, Mr. Oliver said he thought to himself, “If I had a magic wand, what would I do? I'd just love to be put in front of the movers and shakers in America.”
I have to say, Jamie Oliver's talk was both inspirational and daunting. In just a generation, we've gone from a country that cooks to a country that microwaves. We're feeding our kids chocolate milk at lunch — and calling that milk. As Oliver explained it, “just wait until the apple growers find out they can sell more apples to schools when they sell them toffee covered apples as fruit.” Ouch.
Here's his acceptance speech:

People gets sick once in a while. Itis waited. Therefore people have sick time at job. Therefore there are doctors and insurance organizations. However there are a lot of basic things to make sure you stay in general perfect health. You must wash your hands. In general, not enough they do this. When using the lavatory. Investigations have been shown and a shockingly low %% of men and women wash their hands after using the restroom or before meals.

I always say: Consume liquid. Liquid cures all sickness. Dehydration is the culprit of many common indisposition like hair and addition bloating. Eight cups of water is the minimum so be sure you're consuming at least that much. Keep in mind that fruits and vegetable juices count towards your daily scoop of hydrating drink. Sport. Physical activity does not have to mean hours on the treadmill sweating away to emaciation. Physical activity can be as easy as walking across the parking lot to the grocery store or doing housework. That's right! Vacuuming burns calories! The more active in basic you are the more exercise you're getting. Consider getting a pedometer. Passometer's have shown that men and women who wear pedometer's are more active than those who do not.
The Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid is different from the Food Pyramid in that it guides you to the foods that will promote a healthy lifestyle. It shows you a guide to eating where you will not feel hungry and you will get to a healthy weight.
The Pyramid Explained The Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid puts sweets at the top, where it is the narrowest, and fruits and vegetables at the bottom where it is the broadest. The Mayo Clinic outlines precise amounts of servings for each of the five categories that are allowed in the Healthy Weight diet program. Following this guideline promotes a healthier lifestyle that has exercise as its key. Leading a non-sedentary lifestyle is the main component of the pyramid and is seen as a circle inside the pyramid.
The Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid breakdown Sweets – Up to 75 calories a day Fats (oils, nuts, etc) – 3-5 daily servings Protein/Dairy (beans, meat, dairy) – 3-7 daily servings Carbohydrates (grains, cereal, bread) – 4-8 daily servings Fruits and Vegetables – unlimited daily servings, with a 3 fruit minimum and a 4 veggie minimum

Stave Off Snacking by Brushing Your Teeth
Many people working on getting in shape find that they frequently crave food in between meals. If you're trying to cut down on your in-between snacking, these simple deterrents can help.

Over at the how-to guide site wikiHow they've put together a guide to decreasing your appetite when you're trying to avoid overeating. Their list contains several gems like:
Brush your teeth or use mouthwash. Most people don't feel like eating right after they do this, especially since it makes many foods taste bad.
Drink some coffee or tea. The caffeine suppresses appetite in some people. Don't add sugar if you're trying to lose weight.
wikiHow isn't the only one to suggest a good mouth cleaning to get your mind off eating. Reader Rico Trevisan wrote into our #tips page:
A good way to keep your munchies at bay is to always brush your teeth when you're itching for a snack that you know you shouldn't eat. Not only will brushing your teeth make you forget that guilt-pleasure, but it will also help you keep your mouth fresh and kissable!
wikiHow also suggests some less-than-pleasant methods, like imagining yourself eating something disgusting or smelling something putrid to kill your appetite—neither of which are anywhere near as pleasant as a minty fresh mouth.
Have your own tip or trick for curbing snacking or eating smaller portions at meal time? Let's hear about it in the comments.
Losing weight and getting fit preoccupied Americans in 2009:
- Nearly one out of two American women, including high school girls, were on a diet.
- Over 40 billion was spent on branded diet plans.
- Children as young as 9 to 11 years old were sometimes or very often dieting.
Yet an epidemic of obesity continues to affect more people than ever before:
- Less than a third of adults enjoyed normal weight.
- Children were two to three times more likely to be overweight today than they were 30 years ago.
Can we begin to reverse these worrisome trends in 2010?
We can if we update our old views with new ways to look at fitness in the coming year.
Old View: It's hopeless! Efforts to lose weight are inevitably doomed to fail. Even if a person manages to lose weight, he or she will eventually regain the weight and add back even more.
New View: You can do it! Strategies for making healthier choices involving diet, physical conditioning and improved self-care are available to you and can be learned. Championing this view is Kelly Brownell, Ph. D., who heads the LEARN Program for Weight Management at Yale University. And thanks to widespread access to the Internet, peer counseling in online communities is expanding. Internet support may include food and exercise diaries, weekly counseling, online weight-loss lessons and motivational phone calls.
Old View: Thin is in! Most individuals, especially women, seek to lose weight because they have internalized the media's ultrathin ideal.
New View: Healthy is in! Health is replacing vanity as the primary reason for pursuing fitness and weight loss. In 2009, researchers reported that four healthy habits could reduce or eliminate 80 percent of major medical problems: eating a healthy diet, not smoking, exercising regularly and maintaining a normal body weight. This insight, combined with rising medical costs, is triggering a focus on fitness.
Old View: If you are fat, you are a bad person. Obesity is a personal problem caused by a lack of willpower.
New View: Obesity is a disease that is treatable. The cost of providing medical care per person has skyrocketed from $356 in 1970 to $8,160 in 2009. Moreover, in 2009, the cost of treating obesity-related medical problems reached $147 billion. Given these costs, obesity has become a public health concern requiring a multifaceted community-based approach. In response, community leaders in Albert Lea, Minnesota, implemented a comprehensive lifestyle program to improve the health and longevity of the city's residents. To increase employee productivity and reduce health insurance costs and absenteeism, corporate wellness programs are proliferating.
Old View: Low-fat diets are required to lose weight. Eating fat makes a person fat. To lose weight, a dieter needs to stick with low- or no-fat foods.
New View: Total calories actually determine weight. The total calories consumed by a person, whether from carbs, fats or proteins, determines weight. Since the goal is a balanced diet, the Mediterranean diet, which includes healthy fats, is recommended by the Mayo Clinic and the American Heart Association as a nutritionally sound and healthy eating plan. Nuts, which until recently were on dieters' “do not eat” lists, are making a comeback because of their health benefits, especially almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans and macadamia nuts. Momentum is growing for mandating information on the caloric content of fast foods and food products.

Old View: Medical intervention is needed. Weight-loss drugs or bariatric surgery can solve the problem of surplus pounds for many people, and advances in medicine can address obesity-related problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer.
New View: A healthy lifestyle is the best way. Prevention, rather than treatment of obesity-related medical problems, will move to the forefront because of the rising cost of medical insurance and healthcare. While the number of bariatric surgeries will continue to skyrocket, family physicians will increasingly write exercise prescriptions in lieu of drug prescriptions.
Old View: Ignore overweight children. Children who are overweight will outgrow their chubbiness, so kids' surplus pounds can be ignored.
New View: Help overweight children now! Dr. Robert Murray, chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on School Health, is alarmed that nearly half of kids and teens are overweight or obese and, as a consequence, children's life expectancies are lower than their parents'. Treating childhood obesity is a serious medical problem that if ignored will place the child at risk for heart disease, diabetes and other serious medical conditions.
Old View: Don't ask, don't tell. Asking employees to modify their unhealthful behavior is an invasion of privacy and violates employees' right to choose their own lifestyle.
New View: Offer help, incentives and access to experts. In 2008, medical insurance premiums reached a record $15,609 for a family of four. Employers are proactively seeking to reduce costs (medical insurance, workers' compensation claims and absenteeism) by restructuring benefit programs. In increasing numbers, employees are being offered incentives to quit smoking or lose weight. They face penalties if they refuse to change habits that drive up the cost of healthcare.
Old View: Hard-core exercise one hour daily. Going to a gym daily for a 60-minute workout on a treadmill and resistance equipment is the best way to exercise.
New View: Diversity, fun and enjoyment. Thanks to popular television programs, dancing for fitness is back, particularly Zumba, a one-hour workout that fuses Latin rhythms with calorie-burning dance movements. Exergaming, such as Wii and Dance Dance Revolution, continues to grow in popularity with young and old alike. Michelle Obama has made the Hula-Hoop popular once again. The use of technologically sophisticated feedback gadgets, from pedometers to heart monitors, will expand. To attract members to the gym during tough economic times, more fitness centers will offer cardio cinema so members can watch a movie while exercising.
Will we continue to get fatter until 2018 when, according to research by Kenneth Thorpe, PhD, of Emory University, 40 percent of us will be obese (and another 33 percent overweight)?
If we are to succeed in reversing the obesity trends and mounting medical care costs, we'll have to find new approaches. And the more readily we learn from the past and update our understanding of the complex nature and causes of obesity, the more quickly we can successfully move into a healthy future.

Blocking a single enzyme leads to increased energy expenditure and loss of body fat — at least in mice, researchers said.
Mice treated with a compound that blocks the so-called Fyn kinase expended 14% more energy than animals treated with an inert compound, according to Claire Bastie, PhD, and colleagues at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.
They also displayed a significant weight loss within 12 hours of receiving the compound, compared with animals given the inert substance, Bastie and colleagues reported in the Feb. 3 issue of Cell Metabolism.
“This is a new mechanism to help the body to burn extra energy,” Bastie said in a statement.
The Fyn kinase has previously been linked to energy use: animals with the enzyme blocked burn more fatty acids and are leaner than their normal littermates, Bastie and colleagues noted.
Those animals also had increased insulin sensitivity, the researchers said, but the absence of the enzyme did not block the normal anabolic processes of protein synthesis and muscle growth during the feeding cycle.
The findings suggested that drugs blocking the enzyme might have a significant effect on energy balance and weight, they theorized.
To test the idea, they turned to wild-type mice and a compound called SU6656, a known inhibitor of the Src family of tyrosine kinases, of which Fyn is a member.
The mice spent spent 48 hours getting used to a so-called metabolic chamber, which allows researchers to monitor energy intake and expenditure. Then the compound was administered via intraperitoneal injection.
Control animals got injections of an inert substance, the researchers said. The shots were given at the beginning of the light cycle, when the animals are least active.
Both groups showed identical carbohydrate use during the dark cycle (when they are most active) that preceded the injection.
After the injection, the control animals reduced energy use as their bodies switched to the normal lipid production seen during the light cycle.
The treated animals, on the other hand, continued to expend energy at a rate that was significantly greater (P<0.0098) than the controls, although there was no significant difference in physical activity.
Because mice eat 80% of their calories during the dark cycle, they have a daily pattern of weight loss and gain, Bastie and colleagues noted, so that 12 hours after the start of the light cycle — when they had been given the shots — their weight was lowest.
But the SU6656-treated mice had a 40% greater weight loss than the control group, a difference that was significant at P<0.003.
Lean mass was slightly reduced in all the animals, Bastie and colleagues said, but without significant differences between groups. On the other hand, fat mass was significantly reduced (P<0.05) in the SU6656-treated mice, they found.
The metabolic effect of the inhibitor appears to be specific to Fyn, because it had no effect on mice lacking the enzyme, the researchers noted.
Unfortunately, SU6656 itself isn't a good choice for clinical trials of the idea in humans, Bastie said, because the Fyn kinase affects the brain, as well as muscle and fat tissue.
“Our next goal,” she said, “is to design something extremely specific to muscle and adipose.”

This is absolutely amazing! I recently did a Google search for a natural feel good pill that did not require a prescription. After finding Relacore and some other pills that were not what I was looking for, I happened to stumble across an article about Hydrocodone and Vicodin. Of course, these euphoria inducing pain pills would require a prescription, right? Wrong!
There are tons of online pharmacy websites that offer drugs like these without a prescription. Most just have you fill out a questionnaire. Of course, you can see the fatal errors that can occur from someone providing false information. Many don't even require any medical history at all, just a credit card number.
Many of these online pharmacy scam websites are based in foreign countries and promise that their prices are far less than those of American pharmacies. This is true. These companies offer up to 80% discounts on many prescription drugs from your local pharmacy.
These online pharmacy scam websites promise a discreet and convenient way to purchase your medications. This is also a great way for drug abusers and dealers to have access to a never ending supply of pharmaceutical candies. It is also a great way for phony drug companies to provide you with out of date prescriptions and counterfeit pills that could be fatal.
Now before you decide to report every one of these types of online pharmacy companies to the authorities, you should know that there are lots of legitimate online pharmacies that you can order you prescriptions from. The keyword here is prescription. You must provide your prescription, either by having your doctor call it in, fax it in, or email it to the company. These legitimate online pharmacies often offer discounts and you have the benefit of ordering your prescriptions discreetly.
So what should you be wary of? Don't ever try to order a prescription medication online when the website doesn't ask for an actual prescription in your name and from your doctor. If there is no U.S. address and phone number to use for contact information then don't even try dealing with them. Imagine getting some fake Phentermine, losing all of your hair, and then not being able to contact the company (scam artists) who screwed you with it.
There is a website that you can go to that lists licensed online pharmacies. If you are interested in purchasing your prescriptions online, check with these guys first:
National Association of Boards of Pharmacy – Phone: 847-698-6227
I looked on their website, napb.net, myself to see if some of these so called online pharmacies were legitimate. I wasn't the least bit to surprised to see that none of the pharmacies that required no medical history or prescription didn't make the list. You can report any suspicious looking sites to these guys as well. These are the types people who get rid of online pharmacy scam websites.
Here is a great example of one of these bogus online pharmacy websites. DrugsForCost.com looks pretty legit. Visit it yourself to see what an online pharmacy scam looks like. You are almost tempted to place an order. Lucky for you, I have warned you of the red flags of these online pharmacy scams.
Click on the 'Contact Us' prompt at the top right hand corner of the DrugsForCost.com homepage. Surprise! No address or phone number. You can always email them, but their email address isn't even displayed. In fact, I don't even see a human being's name anywhere on the site!
Now look at the bottom right hand corner of the site. Aha! There is a U.S. site that they are affiliated with. Click on the FrontierPharmacies.com link provided and see if you can tell if they are a legitimate online pharmacy or a clever scam. Can you tell? Well, let's see, they do provide a U.S. customer service number at the top right hand corner of the site. The company website looks real enough so they must be the real deal, right?
Well, the U.S. customer service number provided will lead you to believe that they can be contacted and therefore must be legitimate. The average person who is buying their prescriptions online is not going to call customer service before receiving their order and having some sort of complication with it.
When was the last time you went to a retail store and headed over to the customer service desk before purchasing any merchandise? Exactly. You go to customer service after you get the product home, have a problem with it, and then need to complain about it or get your money back.
I have done my homework so you don't have to be screwed by these types of online pharmacy scam companies. I did something that FrontierPharmacies.com wouldn't expect of a typical customer. I called the customer service number provided before purchasing anything. This was at 7:15 am, not at some ungodly hour. The phone rang twelve times and then hung up. I never even got an answering machine! No automated menus. No 'all customer service reps are busy' message. Not even some robot telling me their hours of operation so that I would know when to call them back.
This is just how sneaky these online pharmacy scam artists can be. I have to be honest here, if it wasn't for my knowledge of these companies' offering prescription medications without an actual prescription, I would have ordered one of their weight loss drugs. It is so much cheaper on the site and I wouldn't have had to go to the doctor and sob about my weight issues.
Now that you know how to spot an online pharmacy scam, be sure to spread the word. Don't be fooled by empty promises of discount drugs without a prescription. You could end up with an expired drug that makes you fatally ill or a placebo that just royally pisses you off. If it sounds too good to be true, then it's probably a scam.

Get $5 off a purchase of $30 or more at Walgreens online now through Saturday, Jan. 23.

An aerobic septic system uses oxygen to stimulate the growth of bacteria, which will help break down wastewater and solids faster. This type of system has a few disadvantages when compared to other types of systems. Some of these disadvantages include cost, electricity, maintenance, and effectiveness. This article will discuss some of the disadvantages of an aerobic septic system.
Cost
One of the main disadvantages of an aerobic septic system is the cost. You will pay much more for this type of system than you would for a convention system. Also, an aerobic septic system will be very expensive to install and maintain.
Electricity
Another disadvantage of an aerobic septic system is that it requires electricity. Air is circulated through the system through use of electric pumps. Therefore, the site that houses an aerobic septic system has to have electricity. You will also have to pay the cost of this electricity usage. You will also need to secure the motor's electrical plug so that it doesn't accidentally come unplugged from the receptacle.
Maintenance
Maintenance is one of the next disadvantages of an aerobic septic system. This type of system is much more complicated than most other systems. An aerobic septic system also requires more frequent maintenance also. Therefore, this type of system will be more costly to maintain. With more components to the system, the risk of something going wrong increases.
Effectiveness
One of the next disadvantages of an aerobic septic system is its effectiveness. Certain things can reduce the effectiveness of this type of system. If harmful chemicals are poured down the train or if it is neglected, an aerobic septic system will not work effectively. This can also occur if the ambient temperature is too low.
Law
One of the final disadvantages of an aerobic septic system is the law. This type of system is not allowed in many municipalities. Therefore, you may not be able to use them in certain locations. You should always check with your town or city before you buy an aerobic septic system.
These are some of the disadvantages of an aerobic septic system. This type of system costs much more than conventional systems. An aerobic septic system is also more complicated, so it requires more frequent maintenance which is also expensive. Certain things can also reduce the effectiveness of these systems such as certain chemicals poured down the drain or if the ambient temperature is too low.

The health benefits of a regular run have long been known, but scientists have never understood the curious ability of exercise to boost brain power.
Now researchers think they have the answer. Neuroscientists at Cambridge University have shown that running stimulates the brain to grow fresh grey matter and it has a big impact on mental ability.
A few days of running led to the growth of hundreds of thousands of new brain cells that improved the ability to recall memories without confusing them, a skill that is crucial for learning and other cognitive tasks, researchers said.
The new brain cells appeared in a region that is linked to the formation and recollection of memories. The work reveals why jogging and other aerobic exercise can improve memory and learning, and potentially slow down the deterioration of mental ability that happens with old age.
“We know exercise can be good for healthy brain function, but this work provides us with a mechanism for the effect,” said Timothy Bussey, a behavioural neuroscientist at Cambridge and a senior author on the study. The research builds on a growing body of work that suggests exercise plays a vital role in keeping the brain healthy by encouraging the growth of fresh brain cells.
Previous studies have shown that “neurogenesis” is limited in people with depression, but that their symptoms can improve if they exercise regularly. Some antidepressant drugs work by encouraging the growth of new brain cells.
Scientists are unsure why exercise triggers the growth of grey matter, but it may be linked to increased blood flow or higher levels of hormones that are released while exercising. Exercise might also reduce stress, which inhibits new brain cells through a hormone called cortisol.
The Cambridge researchers joined forces with colleagues at the US National Institute on Ageing in Maryland to investigate the effect of running.
They studied two groups of mice, one of which had unlimited access to a running wheel throughout. The other mice formed a control group. In a brief training session, the mice were put in front of a computer screen that displayed two identical squares side by side. If they nudged the one on the left with their nose they received a sugar pellet reward. If they nudged the one on the right, they got nothing.
After training the mice went on to do the memory test. The more they nudged the correct square, the better they scored. At the start of the test, the squares were 30cm apart, but got closer and closer together until they were almost touching. This part of the experiment was designed to test how good the mice were at separating two very similar memories. The human equivalent could be remembering what a person had for dinner yesterday and the day before, or where they parked on different trips to the supermarket.
The running mice clocked up an average of 15 miles (24km) a day. Their scores in the memory test were nearly twice as high as those of the control group. The greatest improvement was seen in the later stages of the experiment, when the two squares were so close they nearly touched, according to a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“At this stage of the experiment, the two memories the mice are forming of the squares are very similar. It is when they have to distinguish between the two that these new brain cells really make a difference,” Bussey said.
The sedentary mice got steadily worse at the test because their memories became too similar to separate.
The scientists also tried to wrongfoot the mice by switching the square that produced a food reward. The running mice were quicker to catch on when scientists changed them around.
Brain tissue taken from the rodents showed that the running mice had grown fresh grey matter during the experiment. Tissue samples from the dentate gyrus part of the brain revealed on average 6,000 new brain cells in every cubic millimetre. The dentate gyrus is part of the hippocampus, one of the few regions of the adult brain that can grow fresh brain cells.
Running stories
“Running! If there's any activity happier, more exhilarating, more nourishing to the imagination, I can't think of what it might be. In running the mind flees with the body, the mysterious efflorescence of language seems to pulse in the brain, in rhythm with our feet and the swinging of our arms.”
Joyce Carole Oates, American author and professor of creative writing at Princeton University:
“When I am running my mind empties itself. Everything I think while running is subordinate to the process. The thoughts that impose themselves on me while running are like light gusts of wind – they appear all of a sudden, disappear again and change nothing.”
Haruki Murakami, Japanese author
“When I run, I think about everything: physics, family problems, plans for the weekend. I haven't made any big discoveries on a run, but it does give me time to think through problems. Some solutions are obvious, but they are only obvious when you are relaxed enough to find them.”
Wolfgang Ketterle, Nobel prizewinning physicist, MIT
“Being a runner, to me, has made being depressed impossible. If ever I'm going through something emotional and just go outside for a run, you can rest assured that I'll come back with clarity and empowerment.”
Alanis Morissette, singer-songwriter
Though regular cycling has its health benefits, not everybody can afford to commute regularly on bikes due to lack of time. An aerobic pedal exerciser makes a very useful tool for such busy people who want to stay fighting fit while fulfilling their various commitments. In short, this small exerciser is aptly matched to meet the various challenges of urban life.
An aerobic pedal exerciser is actually a bicycle without wheels; instead, it has one pair of pedals. You can place the exerciser on your floor; under your office desk for a regular leg workout or on your table top for an arm exercise. You would find a variety of aerobic pedal exercisers to choose from. Two of these are as under:
- The Standard Aerobic Pedal Exerciser gives a new meaning to versatility. You can tone your muscles at a moderately brisk pace without taking your eyes off your computer monitor! The exerciser is made of heavy-duty chrome plated steel frame while its plastic pedals come with nylon straps for superior durability. As its center knob raises the pedal resistance, this provides the required workout to your various muscles and thus improving your blood circulation.
- The Invacare ISG8150 Standard Aerobic Pedal Exerciser is also a great workout tool you can consider. It has similar features like that of Standard Aerobic Exerciser – sturdily-built chrome plated steel frame, plastic pedals featuring nylon straps and center knob which gradually raises the resistance of its pedals. The exerciser is supposed to promote cardiovascular circulation and enhance the overall functioning of cardiovascular muscles.
